Grateful Dead - Frank Zappa - Right On!

Those who know me well and even many of those who know me well enough know that I love the Grateful Dead.

Some interesting thoughts posted on Shaun Mullen's blog today about the Dead and the special place they occupy in the canon of modern American song.

And hey, you just gotta love a blog where the masthead subtitle is a Frank Zappa quote. A really good Frank Zappa quote from 1977.

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre."

Rory's Irish Pub Rocks

Yeah baby! Had a great time playing at Rory's last night. A hundred and a half percent better than Friday's rained-out gig. We are still expanding our repertoire and starting to get tight on a bunch of really cool songs.

So much fun! Of course Jen Gill sat in with us on saome numbers - she's got a great singing voice and can play guitar very well too. Also had another American guy - Johnny Flash - sit in and do a bunch of songs.

Gamelan - Music of Java, Indonesia

I've been listening to a lot of Gamelan music lately.

In his book 'music of Java' Jaap Kunst says, "Gamelan is comparable to only two things, moonlight and flowing water. ...mysterious like moonlight and always changing like flowing water ...".
